People ask me what drives me. They expect me to say passion. I never say passion.
The first time I stayed up past 2 a.m. writing code — 2008 — it was not passion. It was a problem I could not stop thinking about. A school database losing student records. A teller system crashing every Friday.
Passion fades. Problems do not.
Find the problem that keeps you awake. Then fix it. Everything else — skill, reputation, portfolio — follows the work.
Start with the problem. Stay with the problem. The code will come.
