Understanding DynamoDB: When to Use It and When to Run

DynamoDB is AWS's managed NoSQL database. It delivers single-digit millisecond latency at any scale, and its pricing model is predictable for read/write capacity.

It excels when: your access patterns are known upfront and simple, you need automatic horizontal scaling without operational overhead, and you are working within the serverless AWS ecosystem.

It struggles when: you need ad-hoc queries across multiple attributes, your data model is relational with complex joins, or your access patterns evolve faster than you can add Global Secondary Indexes.

SellTrove uses DynamoDB for session data, product listings (accessed by seller ID and product slug), and order history. It uses MySQL for financial records, reconciliation, and any data requiring complex querying. Understand the access patterns before choosing the database.
