To the Developer Who Thinks the Playing Field Is Not Level

You are right. The playing field is not level. The developer in San Francisco has faster internet, better hardware, easier conference access.

But the internet is level. The documentation is the same. The open-source tools are the same. The problems needing solving — in insurance, banking, healthcare — are often larger and more urgent in Africa than anywhere else.

I built my first security system on a laptop that would be laughed at today, with a connection that dropped twice a day. That work is the ancestor of enterprise systems covering hundreds of endpoints and processing millions of dollars annually.

The playing field is not level. Build anyway. The work levels the field more effectively than any protest about it.
